A Guide to Winterizing Your Watermaker
Watermakers are vital for vessels, providing a reliable source of fresh water while at sea. However, proper maintenance—including winterization—is crucial to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your unit. In this guide, we will discuss the steps to effectively winterize your watermaker to prevent potential damage caused by freezing temperatures and stagnation during the off-season.
1. Flushing the System
Before winterizing, thoroughly flush the entire system with clean fresh water to remove salt water, minerals, and contaminants. Run the watermaker for a sufficient period to ensure all internal components are properly rinsed.
2. Membrane Preservation (Pickling)
To protect the membranes during the winter months, “pickling” is essential. Prepare a preservation solution recommended by the manufacturer (usually a food-grade sodium metabisulfite solution) and circulate it through the membranes to prevent biological growth and drying.
3. Draining the System
After the preservation process, drain the watermaker system as much as possible. Open all drain valves and ensure that no trapped water remains in areas where it could freeze and cause cracks.
